How lucky that somebody in the WPA decided it was worth it to have folks go out and interview former slaves while there were still so many still alive! I would suspect there were those who considered it ‘wasteful government spending’. Thank goodness nobody listened. All the people interviewed are long gone. What a legacy they left for the rest of us. First person insight is remarkably different and far richer than what we learned in those textbooks at school.
